Two Christians Sentenced to Prison and Heavy Fine in Algeria

TIZI-OUZOU, Algeria, March 4, 2021 (Morning Star News) – A court in Algeria has convicted and sentenced in absentia a pastor and another Christian to two years in prison and a heavy fine, accusing them of “shaking the faith” of Muslims with Christian literature at their bookstore, sources said.
Pastor Rachid Seighir and Nouh Hamimi learned by a written notification slipped under the door of their church building in Oran, a coastal city 268 miles west of Algiers, that they had been sentenced to prison and fined 500,000 Algerian dinars (US$3,745).
The pastor was the manager of the now-closed bookstore, where Hamimi worked as a salesman. The judgment reads that they are condemned for “distributing publications or any other propaganda undermining the faith of a Muslim.”
Pastor Seighir of Oratoire Church in Oran said the conviction was mere retaliation in a conflict over the bookstore going back to 2008, when he was convicted of the same charges and acquitted on appeal. The governor of Oran ordered the bookshop closed in 2017, but in April 2018, a court ruled the closure order was invalid due to procedural problems – though authorities continued to keep the bookshop closed, he said.

(Open Doors) РFour Christian men were attacked with knives and sticks and forced to eat sheets of the Bible in a recent, shocking incident in Venezuela. It took place in Libertador, a city in M̩rida state. The perpetrators are believed to oppose the work of Restoration House, a church-led drug rehabilitation programme which the four victims had joined.
In Latin America, the illegal activities of drug gangs are endangered by churches who deter people from criminality. This can lead to opposition against Christians and may explain this latest incident in Venezuela.
The four men were in the house when eight hooded men broke in and began hurling curses at them. The group destroyed the house, scarred the men with Xs and forced them to eat pages from the Bible. “The criminals covered our faces and started to beat and stab us,” one of the victims reports.
Pastor Dugarte, who set up Restoration House with his wife, says that threats about the home had been made prior to the attack. “Weeks before the attack, in the middle of a meeting discussing neighbourhood issues, two men said they were going to end the Restoration House because they did not agree with this type of programme,” he reports.

02/10/2021 China (International Christian Concern) – A Christian man in China’s Hunan who passionately shares the Gospel with passersby has been detained four times in the past four months.
According to China Aid, Chen Wensheng from the Xiaoqun Church in Hengyang has been in detention for a total of 25 days for his street evangelism since the beginning of this year.
He was first detained on New Year’s day for ten days for sharing the Good News. Yet on the day of his release, he and his 84-year-old mother went back to the streets and continued their evangelism. For this, both of them were brought back to the police station. While his mother was released at 11 pm, he was again detained for another 15 days.
On January 29, two days after he was released from the detention center, he had people from the local authorities visit his home to persuade him to stop his street evangelism. The staff from the urban management force, his community, public security bureau, state security bureau, and United Front Work Department were at his place until midnight.
As someone who does not miss a chance to share the Gospel, he seized the opportunity to talk to them about his faith. A public servant even asked him about the Bible during their conversation.
A former drug addict whose life was transformed by God, Chen is determined to share the power of the Gospel on the streets, despite all the repeated warnings and threats. He even made up his mind in sharing the Good News in prisons.
